Our Mission
The Genealogical Society of South Brevard (GSSB) supports anyone interested in researching, discovering, and documenting their family history by providing educational programs, research resources, and opportunities for both members and the public.
Genealogy Research Library
GSSB maintains an extensive genealogy research library in the Family History Room at the Melbourne Public Library (540 E. Fee Avenue). The collection comprises over 7,000 print items, 500+ microfilms, 3,000+ microfiche, and special collections, including the Melbourne City Hall records and the Farley Collection. Patrons have access to film and fiche readers, two computers with subscription websites (Ancestry.com, Newspapers.com, Fold3.com), and workspace tables. Materials are for in-library use only.
Educational Programs
Each month, we provide educational programs, workshops, and classes to help individuals advance their genealogical research.
Special Interest Groups
GSSB sponsors five Special Interest Groups (SIGs), each focusing on specific areas of genealogical research:
- French & Canadian Heritage Society: Concentrates on French, Canadian, and Acadian genealogical research. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. in the Conference Room at the Melbourne Public Library.
- Family History Writers Group: Provides support and guidance for writing family histories.
- British Isles Research Group: Focuses on genealogical research pertaining to the British Isles.
- Mayflower Society Research Group: Dedicated to researching Mayflower ancestry.
- DNA Genetic Genealogy Research Group: Explores the use of DNA in genealogical research.
All SIGs typically meet monthly and are open to GSSB members.
GSSB Bulletin
The Bulletin Publishing Committee produces GSSB's quarterly Bulletin, handling writing, editing, design, and publication.
